Sustainable development is not possible without good governance and policy reforms: Debapriya Bhattacharya

Debapriya Bhattacharya said these things while delivering his keynote speech at a seminar titled ‘Bangladesh in Transition: Governance, Economy and Policy Reforms’ organized by the Development Studies Discipline at the Lecture Theater of the URP Discipline of Khulna University today, Wednesday at 11 am. Debapriya Bhattacharya said, ‘For reforms, first, one must gain ideological firmness. The problem areas must be clearly identified and the ideas must be taken to the implementation stage. For this, it is important to clearly define the main objectives of the reforms in terms of structural change, policy coordination, addressing global and domestic challenges, and which interests will be prioritized.’

CPD Fellow Debapriya Bhattacharya said, ‘A democratic environment, media freedom, and active participation of stakeholders are essential for sustainable reforms. Investments need to be accelerated and reforms need to be taken forward with a universal perspective. Reforms are not possible for any single individual or institution. This is a holistic process. For this, progressive political arrangements are needed to strengthen the reform coalition. In addition, special importance must be given to the development of the backward sections of the society.’

Professor Rezaul Karim, Vice Chancellor of the university, delivered the keynote address at the seminar. He said that to further accelerate the progress of Bangladesh, good governance and policy reforms need to be made contemporary. There is no alternative to developing the new generation as qualified human resources through higher education, research, and knowledge acquisition. Khulna University is always striving to make students research-oriented and make an effective contribution to the development and advancement of the country.

The seminar was chaired by Kazi Humayun Kabir, Head of the Development Studies Discipline, and Professor Sheikh Sharafat Hossain, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, delivered the special guest address. Associate Professor Jobayer Hossain of the discipline delivered the welcome address. The program was moderated by Assistant Professor Farhana Haque of the discipline and Lecturer Irin Azhar. The keynote speaker at the seminar, Debapriya Bhattacharya, was presented with the crest of honor. Teachers of the relevant discipline and a large number of students from different years were present at the seminar.
